Perplexity has been rapidly expanding in India following the doubling of efforts from rivals like Google, OpenAI, Meta and xAI. After partnering with Airtel to extend the benefits of its Perplexity Pro subscription to a vast audience for free, Perplexity has now released its Comet browser in India – the much-awaited web browser that has OpenAI’s ChatGPT at its heart. India’s arrival, however, comes with a catch.
In a significant move to challenge Google’s dominance in the search market, Perplexity AI has now launched its AI-powered Comet web browser for all its Pro subscribers in India. The rollout, announced by CEO Aravind Srinivas on social media, marks the company’s biggest expansion into the country, all in the hope of leveraging India’s vast and digitally savvy user base.
Perplexity Comet comes to India
Comet was initially introduced in July exclusively to Perplexity’s Max subscribers and has now been extended to Pro subscribers as part of rapid expansion plans. The Comet browser is currently available on both Windows and macOS devices, and the company has opened pre-bookings for Android users on the Google Play Store. There are no updates for the iOS version yet.
However, note that the Comet is only available to Perplexity Pro subscribers and hence, those with a free account won’t be able to download it. An annual subscription to the Pro tier costs Rs 17,000 a year. Airtel subscribers, however, get access to the Pro tier service for a whole year for free.
How is Comet different from Google Chrome
Comet distinguishes itself from competitors like Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge by integrating a standard web interface with an always-on, AI-driven sidebar. This unique feature, which Perplexity describes as agentic, allows users to perform complex, multi-step tasks that go far beyond simple browsing. The browser can automate a wide range of functions, including comparing product prices, summarising documents, scheduling meetings, drafting and sending emails, and even completing online transactions.
A key highlight of Comet is its workspace interface, which removes the need for managing multiple tabs by consolidating all relevant information in a single, unified view. The AI assistant within Comet learns from the user’s browsing history, work habits, and search queries to provide contextual and highly relevant information, which effectively acts as a personal research agent.
Comet can be downloaded from the homepage of the Perplexity AI chatbot once you log in. You also search for the same on Google Search to get the link.
