On September 22 local time, OpenAI and NVIDIA jointly announced a milestone strategic partnership letter of intent to deploy at least 10 gigawatts of NVIDIA systems for OpenAI’s next-generation AI infrastructure, aimed at training and running its next-generation models on the path to deploying superintelligence.
To support this deployment, including data centers and power capacity, NVIDIA intends to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI when deploying the new NVIDIA systems. The first phase is scheduled to go live in the second half of 2026 using the NVIDIA Vera Rubin platform.
“NVIDIA and OpenAI have been pushing each other for the past decade, from the first DGX supercomputer to the breakthroughs of ChatGPT,” said NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang. “This investment and infrastructure partnership marks the next leap forward—deploying 10 gigawatts of power to fuel the next intelligent era.”
“Everything starts with computing,” said Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI. “Computing infrastructure will be the foundation of the future economy, and we will leverage what we build with NVIDIA to create new breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and support people and businesses at scale.”
“Since the inception of OpenAI, we have closely collaborated with NVIDIA,” said Greg Brockman, co-founder and president of OpenAI. “We have utilized their platform to create AI systems that are used by hundreds of millions of people every day. We are excited to deploy 10 gigawatts of computing power with NVIDIA to push the frontiers of intelligence and extend the benefits of this technology to everyone.”
OpenAI will collaborate with NVIDIA as its preferred strategic computing and networking partner for its AI factory growth plan. OpenAI and NVIDIA will jointly optimize the roadmap for OpenAI’s models and infrastructure software alongside NVIDIA’s hardware and software.
This collaboration complements the extensive work that OpenAI and NVIDIA have already done with a wide network of collaborators, including Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank, and Stargate partners, focused on building the world’s most advanced artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Currently, OpenAI has grown to over 700 million active users per week and is widely adopted among businesses, small enterprises, and developers globally. This collaboration will help OpenAI advance its mission of building general artificial intelligence for the benefit of all humanity.
NVIDIA and OpenAI look forward to finalizing the details of this new phase of strategic partnership in the coming weeks.
