Google is bringing new AI video generation capabilities to Google Photos with the integration of its Veo 3 software. This new feature allows users in the U.S. to transform static images into four-second videos. Users can find the new options—”Subtle movements” and “I’m feeling lucky”—under the Create tab in Google Photos.

According to Google spokesperson Michael Marconi, the new feature can make subjects in a photo dance or add effects like confetti. The upgrade to Veo 3 replaces the previous Veo 2 software, improving the resolution and fidelity of the generated videos.
This latest release is part of Google’s broader effort to make AI video generation tools more accessible to its users. At the I/O event in May, the company launched the Veo 3 model alongside Flow, a text-to-video software. In August, users also got limited access to Vids, an AI-powered video editor.

While Veo 3’s most touted feature is its “incredibly realistic” sound generation, the version available in Google Photos currently does not include this capability. Free Photos users can generate a limited number of videos per day, while Ultra and Pro subscribers have access to more generations.
In addition to adding motion to still images, the AI tool also allows users to restyle a photo into a 3D animation and create video montages from their photo gallery using keywords.
