Here’s Why Elon Musk Is Suing OpenAI… Again

Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and two of its founders, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, once again claiming that the makers of ChatGPT betrayed their founding aim of aiding to public good. Instead, Musk claimed, they were pursuing profit. Here is a breakdown of the lawsuit and why the X owner is suing OpenAI.

Why is Elon Musk suing OpenAI?

Earlier this month, Elon Musk, the billionaire founder of SpaceX, sued OpenAI for betraying its founding aims of benefiting the public good rather than pursuing profits. He filed the lawsuit in a Northern California federal court. The suit claimed that “Altman and his company intentionally courted and deceived Musk, preying on Musk’s humanitarian concern about the existential dangers posed by artificial intelligence.”

Musk was one of the early investors in OpenAI back in 2015. He co-chaired its board alongside Altman. In his lawsuit, he further claimed that he invested millions of dollars and recruited top AI research scientists for OpenAI. In 2018, Musk left the project.

Interestingly, this is not the first lawsuit Musk has filed against OpenAI. He had sued OpenAI for the same reasons back in February. He filed the case at the San Francisco Superior Court back then, but dropped it abruptly without explanation in June (via AP).

More recently. Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup xAI has sued Apple and OpenAI for allegedly conspiring to thwart competition in artificial intelligence. The new lawsuit claims that Apple and OpenAI have “locked up markets to maintain their monopolies and prevent innovators like X and xAI from competing.” xAI is reportedly seeking billions of dollars in alleged damages following this.

The ongoing conflict between OpenAI and Elon Musk remains active. More details about the lawsuit are expected to emerge soon. Stay tuned for updates.
