Contract-focused Definely has launched Cascade, a ‘first-of-its-kind solution’ which detects and tracks the domino-effect of changes within contracts, helping to reduce risk when you alter a clause.
I.e. you make a change to a clause, which then looks totally fine, but what does that do to other parts of the agreement? It’s one of those complex and often subtle problems that can be overlooked in a rapid contract review process. So, this tool should be very handy.
The UK-based company, which raised $30m this June, said that Cascade represents the ‘first AI-powered solution capable of identifying first, second, and third-order [domino-effects] from any contract modification’.
It raises an interesting aspect of the accelerating contract review environment we are now in, i.e. AI helps us move a lot faster, but by going so fast do you then miss some of the more downstream impacts of rapid review?
So, how do they do this?
The company said that the new feature is built on top of Definely’s existing Agentic Framework technology and their Draft product, which analyses the structure and relationships within contracts.
Cascade then leverages embedding technology and LLMs to ‘rapidly detect semantic and structural consequences of an edit to a contract, pinpointing precisely where other language adjustments are needed across the rest of the contract, significantly reducing the risk of missing important consequences’.
The tool also integrates into lawyers’ existing workflows within Microsoft Word, extracting all identified changes into a consolidated view. Users can also interrogate the system’s findings using natural language queries, asking in the same intuitive way they would approach the analysis manually, but with dramatically improved speed and accuracy, they added.
HaEun Yoon, AI Product Manager at Definely, commented: ‘Cascade de-risks the drafting process, ensuring that lawyers never miss a critical dependency, which could result in financial losses and damage to their firm’s reputation.’
And Feargus MacDaeid, Co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Definely, concluded: ‘Cascade is the next step for lawyers when it comes to having the right tools for high-value and complex work. Unlike conventional tools that barely scratch the surface, Cascade reveals up to three levels of impact from a single change. Cascade marks an exciting advancement in Definely’s product suite, underscoring our commitment to delivering best-in-class solutions for our in-house and private practice customers.’
Nice work Definely team.
