OpenAI’s Search Engine Could be Announced as Early as May 13

An artificial intelligence-powered search engine by OpenAI could make headlines on Monday, as several inside sources claim the AI giant plans to make a major announcement at the start of the week.

The AI search engine will serve as a direct competitor to Alphabet Inc.’s Google.

The announcement date has not been released previously; however, it is open to change. The announcement might have been timed to coincide with the opening of Google’s annual I/O conference on Tuesday, when the tech giant is anticipated to reveal several items connected to artificial intelligence.

Google has been the best search engine for decades, offering solutions for a variety of problems, but its supremacy in the future is questionable given the rise of AI chatbots.

As initially reported in February, the leading AI research center, OpenAI, began working on a web search solution.

Web search control will probably be gradual, with Google dominating search for the foreseeable future, according to Ed Watal, the founder of Intellibus and an artificial intelligence professor at New York University, who spoke with Tech Times about the rapid rise in popularity of tools like ChatGPT in recent years.

That does not mean, though, that Google will not eventually lose its position; the internet behemoth defeated Yahoo, Alta Vista, and other rivals.

OpenAI’s Dominance

Sources indicate that OpenAI’s search tool is an addition to its popular ChatGPT product, allowing ChatGPT to retrieve straight Web material and citations.

OpenAI’s chatbot product, ChatGPT, generates responses to text prompts that resemble those of a human using the company’s state-of-the-art AI models.

Industry watchers have long referred to ChatGPT as a substitute for obtaining Internet data, even though it has had difficulty delivering precise and current Web data.

Previously, OpenAI integrated it with Microsoft Bing for subscribers who paid for access. Google, meanwhile, has shown generative AI capabilities for its engine bearing the same name.

Other AI-powered Search Engines

Several AI research labs have considered releasing a web search product before OpenAI. Launched in August 2022, perplexity.ai focuses on search-based questions rather than conversational responses, as was the case with earlier AI systems.

Since its introduction, the search engine has been valued at approximately $520 million despite its comparatively low popularity (it has about 10 million monthly users as opposed to Google’s 1.5 billion users).

Microsoft also unveiled an AI-powered search engine through its Copilot chatbot. Since early February 2023, Copilot has been a prominent feature on Microsoft’s search engine, Bing.

Users can ask queries of the chatbot and get responses that sound human and include connections to relevant sites.

Since Copilot is directly connected to the internet, it can deliver the most recent information in its responses, unlike the free version of ChatGPT.

Microsoft revealed that the AI-supported Bing search engine had over 100 million daily active users just one month after its launch.
