AI Is Steadily Conquering The IP World – Survey – Artificial Lawyer

A new survey by Questel of over 500 professionals working in IP, at law firms and inhouse, has found that 58% use AI tools already, with 46% doing so every day. Only 5% were dragging their feet on adoption, with the remainder moving toward onboarding the tech.

When those who are using such tools were asked ‘why?’, the survey found that:
– ‘77% are actively seeking ways to save time and costs.
– 45% believe AI technologies are an inevitable progression.
– 42% are interested in any tech that adds new efficiencies.
– 39% invested in AI out of curiosity to measure quality and potential benefits.’

And in the tasks AI is used for, it’s areas such as summarisation, search – including image search, translation, and market surveillance, which one would expect. Also as expected, IP experts said they wanted data security and a high level of trust when it came to choosing a provider.

Benoit Chevalier, Patent Product Strategy Director at Questel – which offers its own IP capabilities – added that having explainable AI will help to build this much-needed trust, plus showing that a vendor is trying hard to prevent hallucinations by ‘citing sources and explaining ‘why’ a result has been generated’ will also help – something he noted Paris-based Questel can do.

You can find the report page here.

Survey Demographics: Questel surveyed more than 500 IP professionals across the globe in Winter/Spring 2025. Participants represented a variety of positions at law firms and corporate legal, with 57% holding senior positions as Chief IP Officer, Head of IP/Legal, GC, Law Firm Partner, or Company Director. 50% of respondents were from Europe, 18% from Americas, 25% from Asia Pacific and 6% from Middle East/Africa. 71% were patent specialists, 12% trademarks/designs/domain names, and 17% specialized in other types of IP. Slightly more than half (53%) of respondents were from in-house/corporate legal departments, 23% from law firms, and the remaining from academia, start-ups and other organizations.
