Dive Brief:

Macy’s this week brought back its Black Friday in July sales event that started on Wednesday and runs through Sunday, according to a press release.
Consumers can shop deals on clothing for men, women and kids, accessories, jewelry, beauty and home. Shoppers can access deals in stores, online or on the Macy’s app.
As part of the event, Macy’s is also celebrating Christmas in July beginning Friday with “holiday-inspired deals, exclusive offers and curated selections that evoke the spirit of the holidays,” per a company spokesperson.

Dive Insight:

The Macy’s event, which features discounts on back-to-school styles for kids and the family, coincides with back-to-school sales from other retailers.

Sales from Target and Walmart earlier this month, held at the same time as Amazon’s Prime Day, included discounts on back-to-school items. Target this week kicked off another sales event focused specifically on those shoppers, dubbed “Back-to-School-idays,” which runs from Sunday through Aug. 2.

Outside of back-to-school, retailers have kicked off other summer sales events as well. Wayfair on Thursday launched a five-day mega summer sales event offering up to 80% off on such home products as mattresses, linens and dinnerware sets.

“Black Friday in July is Macy’s attempt at driving some sales and volume,” Neil Saunders, GlobalData managing director, said in an email to Retail Dive. “We have seen from various summer events that people are willing to buy if the price is right. There is still some fear around tariffs pushing up prices, so a lot of shoppers have brought forward spending.”

The “Black Friday in July” sale comes after Macy’s saw Q1 net sales fall about 5% year over year to $4.6 billion and comps decline 1.2%. Credit card revenue was up 31% to $154 million.
