Will Lovable Change Legal Tech Development Forever? – Artificial Lawyer

If you’ve not heard of Lovable yet, they’re a ‘vibe coding’ pioneer that taps genAI to build software applications for you – including legal tech tools. Will this change the legal tech development world forever?

(Note: the Sweden-based startup has just bagged $200m and is valued at $1.8 billion – and seems to be growing at an incredible speed.)

First, what does Lovable do? The easy way to find out is to go to their website and see how they can help you to build practice management and document generation systems. See their page dedicated to building legal tech tools.

And here are some of the examples.

Here are four ‘readymade’ applications with variations, which Lovable provides to get you started. But you can build whatever you want.

But, is it building the entire application for you? As you will see in the example below, it’s doing a lot. It’s giving you – without any need for you to code – the ‘shape’, as it were, of the site, i.e. the UI/UX, and filling it in with a very sensible approach to how a customer will engage with it.

And here is a doc generation example, i.e. Lovable has just knocked this out for you to use, you can then modify it as much as you want – in part using their platform, and in part you’ll have to use some expert input as well – as well as provide legal data you trust.

All three of the above images are part of one of Lovable’s example legal tech products. You can then take it from there and develop using their platform…up to a point.

One would guess this is possible because it’s training on existing legal tech companies out there – and if not, AL is not sure how they do this….? Lovable, if you’re reading this, we’d be delighted to know how you do this.

But, as some have noted, it only gets you 80% of the way there. Plus, one thing that struck AL is that it won’t have access to the best data. So, if for example you are building a contract generation system, it will give you a nice UI/UX, provide workflows and more to help with the customer journey, but it can’t really be relied upon to give bona fide legal data and content. That’s up to you.

That said, for some companies this may not matter because A) they have the data and just need help on the UI/UX part of the design, or B) their application is of a type that will not need to have any data of its own.

Is this a big deal?

Well, here’s some AL thoughts:

For incumbent legal tech companies it could massively reduce their engineering costs, especially around UI/UX – and that’s got to help.

For new arrivals, it lowers the moat even more. The moat is already low because LLMs can be used by anyone. By adding in a super-fast and easy UI/UX provider like this – then you can move even faster and more cheaply to an MVP. In fact, you could probably have an ‘OK’ tool by the end of the day.

And for law firms and inhouse legal teams that like to build their own applications then this is an incredible opportunity. As noted, there will be issues around trusted data, and also a range of security needs that will have to be met. But, Lovable could get people a long way through a project before they need to call in engineering experts who can really code and/or legal SMEs to fine-tune the application to meet their specific needs.

Overall, it just makes it easier for everyone to build their own legal tech tools, especially the frontend part. The backend, the legal data, the security aspects, building logical workflows that actually match real world needs of professionals…..well, that’s something else.

That said, Loveable will indeed have an impact and this site would not be surprised if some legal tech companies are already using it, as well as some law firms.

You can see more about Lovable here.
