YouTube Shorts now allows creators to generate videos from static pictures using its Veo 2 video generation model. The platform has also introduced AI-powered visual effects and a new hub called AI Playground. Additionally, a new feature transforms photos into dynamic six-second videos and a new image-to-video feature is rolling out in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

YouTube Shorts has significantly bolstered its generative AI features, offering creators new tools to transform static images into dynamic videos and enhancing visual effects. The platform has introduced the Veo 2 video generation model to create six-second videos from pictures, with options for “subtle movements” or “I’m feeling lucky” prompts [1].

This new image-to-video feature is rolling out in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with plans to expand to more regions later this year [1]. It allows users to add movement to landscape photos, animate everyday pictures, and bring group photos to life. For instance, a static image of a pedestrian signal can be transformed into a short video with a dancing walking man symbol [1].

In addition to the image-to-video feature, YouTube Shorts has introduced a new hub called AI Playground. This hub provides creators with generative AI creation tools, inspirational examples, and pre-filled prompts. Creators can access AI Playground by tapping the create button and then the sparkle icon in the top right corner [1].

YouTube Shorts is also offering new AI-powered visual effects. Creators can transform their doodles into artistic images and turn their selfies into videos where they appear to be swimming underwater or twinning with someone. These effects are accessible by navigating to the “Effects” icon in the Shorts camera and tapping “AI” [1].

The features announced today are powered by Veo 2, Google’s AI model for video generation. YouTube employs SynthID watermarks and clear labels to indicate that these creations were generated with AI [1].

Last month at Cannes Lions 2025, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced that Google’s Veo 3 video generator, which can generate both video and audio, will be coming to Shorts later this summer. He also shared that Shorts are now averaging more than 200 billion daily views [1].
