OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says his son likely won’t attend college and will “never” live in a world where he’s smarter than AI.

Since launching OpenAI, Sam Altman has been working towards creating the world’s smartest AI model alongside its chatbot, ChatGPT.

He’s skyrocketed in popularity, too, and has appeared on hundreds of podcasts where he shares his overall thoughts about the industry.

On Wednesday, July 23, Altman visited Theo Von’s podcast to talk about AI – and shared his thoughts about his son’s future.

Sam Altman says son will “never” be smarter than AI

During the show, Theo asked Altman about his son who was born back in February 2025 and what the OpenAI CEO thinks about his future.

Sam explained that he was a college dropout, and that his son will likely never go to college when he gets older.

“My kid will never ever be smarter than an AI, that will never happen,” he said. “Kids born a few years ago had a brief period of time [where they could be], but my kid will never be smarter.

“Also, they’ll never know a world where products and services aren’t way smarter than them. Education’s going to feel a lot different [in 18 years].”

OpenAI has continued to launch a plethora of new features in ChatGPT that make it “smarter” and more capable each time.

Back in March, a new GPT model was released that could help users create their own Studio Ghibli-esque photos, starting a social media trend in the process.

The trend went so viral, in fact, that Altman claimed the amount of requests they were processing was “melting” server processors.
