In 2025, the global tech industry has witnessed a significant wave of layoffs, with over 100,000 jobs cut across major companies. Driven by shifting market dynamics, cost-cutting measures, and a renewed focus on AI and automation, tech giants such as Microsoft, IBM, and Intel have all trimmed their workforces. Microsoft has recently revealed another wave of job cuts, planning to let go of 9,100 staff members, mainly affecting its Xbox and gaming divisions.

Microsoft delivers major blows to gaming and cloud divisions

In its latest cost-reduction effort, Microsoft Corporation has initiated layoffs impacting roughly 9,000 employees, marking the second major downsizing this year. This reduction represents under 4% of its global workforce and spans multiple departments, locations, and experience levels. The recent layoffs follow a similar move in May, when about 6,000 workers—mainly from product development and engineering—were dismissed. This round is expected to heavily impact sales teams and also affect other areas such as Xbox, according to earlier reports from Bloomberg.

Intel slashes chip division workforce with 20% layoffs expected

Intel is preparing to reduce its factory workforce by up to 20%, a significant downsizing that will heavily impact one of its key business areas. “These decisions are tough but necessary to address our financial constraints and affordability goals. We recognize the hardship this causes for everyone involved,” stated Naga Chandrasekaran, Intel’s Vice President of Manufacturing, in a message to employees on Saturday. The company aims to implement job cuts ranging from 15% to 20%, with the majority expected to occur in July.

Google layoffs:

In April, the tech giant trimmed a quarter of its Google TV workforce, according to a report by The Information (cited by 9to5Google). The layoffs followed a 10% reduction in the Google TV budget. While the exact number of positions eliminated remains unclear, the Google TV team was reportedly around 300 employees prior to the cuts, indicating that approximately 75 jobs were impacted.

Infosys lays off 240 employees

Infosys has reportedly terminated 240 entry-level employees who failed to pass the company’s internal assessments, marking the second round of such layoffs in recent months. Earlier in February 2025, the company dismissed over 300 freshers for similar reasons. The latest group affected included hires designated as System Engineers (SE) and Digital Specialist Engineers (DSE).
