Unravel Data Systems Inc., which builds software that helps businesses understand and optimize the performance and cost of applications and data pipelines, today is introducing a free application that helps users of the Snowflake Inc. cloud data platform identify and address inefficiencies in their workloads.
The announcement is being made at Snowflake Summit 2025 in San Francisco.
Unravel Health Check is a Snowflake-native application, meaning it was developed using Snowflake’s Native Application Framework and Snowpark Container Services. Snowpark is a developer framework that enables users to write complex data transformation and processing logic directly within the Snowflake platform.
Health Check provides detailed information about the warehouse, SQL and storage usage, applying artificial intelligence to pinpoint optimization opportunities without requiring data to leave the Snowflake environment.
The software analyzes up to 30 days of usage data and provides recommendations in three main areas: warehouse rightsizing, query efficiency and storage optimization. The goal is to help customers reduce unnecessary spending and better manage unpredictable data platform costs.
Right-sizing challenge
Right-sizing infrastructure is “one of the big challenges all organizations have, because there are thousands of users, data scientists and analysts, creating queries all the time,” said Chief Marketing Officer Keith Alsheimer. “Identifying inefficiencies is problem one, and fixing it is problem two. We’re helping for free with problem one.”
The free application leaves it up to users to resolve any identified performance issues. They can optionally purchase a paid upgrade that resolves problems automatically. For example, it can automatically rewrite inefficient SQL code or resize infrastructure to better match workload demands.
The application can be installed directly from Snowflake Marketplace and runs entirely within a user’s Snowflake environment, eliminating security and privacy concerns that Unravel said are common with third-party tools.
Unravel Data is responding to a growing challenge among Snowflake’s large customers with managing the cost and complexity of vast numbers of daily queries and mounting storage volumes, said Chief Marketing Officer Keith Alsheimer.
“There’s massive waste – 30% to 40% — in the spend and utilization of not only the data platform, but the underlying cloud infrastructure,” he said, citing Gartner Inc. estimates. “These organizations have no way to have a clear understanding or control of that spend because it’s at such a granular level.”
“We’re helping for free with problem one: identifying the issues,” Alsheimer said. “Unravel’s paid version addresses problem two of fixing those issues at scale.”
Unravel says it is the first third-party developer to use Snowpark Container Services to build a full-scale observability application for Snowflake. While other tools offer monitoring and cost analysis, Alsheimer said Unravel is distinctive for its emphasis on actionable diagnoses.
“We’ve always had AI as our baseline, but the biggest difference we offer now is what we call actionability,” he said. “We don’t just show you the inefficiencies; we can guide you through fixing them or fix them for you.”
Unravel Health Check is available now.
