Protein Industries Canada Targets Supply Chain Resilience with $15 Million in Genomics and AI Funding – vegconomist

Protein Industries Canada has announced a new funding allocation of $15 million from the Government of Canada to support genomics and artificial intelligence (AI) programs targeting the country’s agrifood industry. The funding is distributed across two streams, aiming to enhance crop breeding capabilities and introduce AI-driven efficiencies throughout the food production value chain.

“This new investment will deliver value across the entire supply chain”

The Genomics Stream will receive $7 million over five years to support the development and commercialization of improved broad-acre crop varieties, with particular focus on pulse and cereal crops. Projects under this stream will utilize genomic technologies to improve plant breeding outcomes and variety development, addressing demand from both growers and ingredient processors.

An $8 million investment in AI initiatives will supplement Protein Industries Canada’s current participation in the Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy. Proposed AI projects may include technologies to accelerate genetic research, optimize supply chains, enhance on-farm data collection, improve quality control, and innovate ingredient and food formulation processes.

Robert Hunter, CEO of Protein Industries Canada, stated, “This new investment will deliver value across the entire supply chain, starting with enhanced genetics that improve crop functionality and provide farmers with more resilient, high-performing options.” He added that the AI funding would “support the development of tools that boost on-farm productivity and sustainability,” contributing to the growth of Canada’s plant-based ingredient and food sector.

Securing domestic supply chains

Earlier this month, Protein Industries Canada partnered with Innovate UK, Canadian growers, and UK universities to develop plant-based burger ingredients from domestic crops. It has also introduced a program to support domestic product reformulation amid US trade uncertainties and is working to increase processing of Canadian-grown soybeans to reinforce supply chain security.

Interested companies can apply to either the Genomics or AI programs through Protein Industries Canada’s website, with ongoing intake and a preliminary eligibility review process before formal submissions.

Hunter concluded, “Together, these advancements—combined with our full value-chain approach—will strengthen Canada’s position as a global supplier of nutritious, functional plant-based food, feed and ingredients, while contributing to our goal of building a $25 billion industry for Canada.”
