Alphabet’s Google is developing an advanced AI-powered agent aimed at assisting software engineers throughout the development process, according to a report by The Information published on Monday.
The tool, which has been demonstrated internally and to select outside developers, is designed to support engineers at various stages of coding—from handling development tasks to writing documentation. The report cites three individuals who have either seen the demonstrations or been briefed by Google employees.
This AI initiative is expected to feature prominently at Google’s annual I/O developer conference, scheduled to take place next week in Mountain View, California, with the keynote address set for 20 May.
In addition to the software agent, Google may also showcase the voice-enabled version of its Gemini AI chatbot integrated with its Android XR (extended reality) glasses and headset—potentially signalling further advances in wearable technology and hands-free digital interaction.
The development comes as investors increase pressure on Google to demonstrate tangible returns from its multibillion-dollar investments in artificial intelligence. The company, while long seen as a leader in AI research, now faces growing competition from rivals like OpenAI and Microsoft, who are rapidly advancing their own AI capabilities.
Google is also navigating growing regulatory scrutiny, with its dominant search and advertising businesses under threat from antitrust investigations in both the U.S. and Europe.
The new AI agent and XR integrations could serve as key highlights at the I/O event, as the company seeks to reassert its innovation credentials and maintain its edge in the increasingly competitive AI landscape.
