LinkedIn Launches AI-Powered Career Discovery Tools

LinkedIn is rolling out a new, AI-powered job search process, which will enable users to describe their dream job in basic terms, which LinkedIn’s system will then be able to match to actual roles and opportunities.

LinkedIn AI job search

As you can see in this sequence, based on conversational queries, you’ll now be able to find job matches that align with what you’re after, even if you don’t know the technical industry terms or specifics.

As explained by LinkedIn:

“The new search experience that lets members describe their goals in their own words and get results that truly reflect what they’re looking for – even roles they didn’t know existed. This is the first step in a larger journey to make job-seeking more intuitive, inclusive, and empowering for everyone.”

Read as: “More AI.”

LinkedIn has been pushing AI into every element of the platform, from posting prompts, to profile summaries, recruiter tools, and more. And given that LinkedIn’s parent company Microsoft is also a major investor in OpenAI, that makes sense, while LinkedIn has also outlined what it sees as the coming era of AI agents, which will undertake more and more of our tasks for us.

In summary, LinkedIn is super keen on AI, so you can expect it to eventually be present in every aspect of the app.

For job search specifically, LinkedIn says that its AI-powered job discovery tools aim to streamline career discovery, through conversational means:

“While traditional job search tools are bounded by predefined filters and keywords, AI Job Search more closely mirrors a discussion with a career advisor or a trusted colleague. Queries aren’t confined by rigid categories and members can use conversational language. For instance: ‘I want to find entry-level jobs in video games’, ‘Use marketing skills to cure cancer’, ‘I want to make cities more walkable and bike-friendly.’”

Using marketing skills to cure cancer is certainly something, but as you can see, the aim is to make it easier to define your ideal career path through AI assessment.

LinkedIn says that the job matching process is built on its Economic Graph data, which provides an unmatched overview of professional insights, based on the platform’s billion+ members.

“This is the first time LinkedIn has applied LLMs across the entire stack of our search and recommender systems from understanding a member’s search query to retrieving all possible jobs and finally ranking the most relevant jobs first. These models power the search with a deeper understanding of the intent, phrasing, and nuances behind the natural language queries.”

It could be a valuable complement to your job search process, helping you better define what you’re aiming for in your career, and guiding your thinking about potential options.

In addition to AI discovery, LinkedIn has also updated its job listings, which will now include additional info on the company’s verifications, as well as its typical response times.

LinkedIn will also now display member compatibility level with job post, based on your profile info, making it easier to find the most relevant opportunities.

“Premium subscribers gain even deeper insights, including job match ratings and actionable suggestions for standing out in an increasingly competitive job market.”

LinkedIn’s also incorporating more AI tools into its professional learning systems, including expanded AI-powered coaching in LinkedIn Learning.

As you can see in this example, now, you’ll be able to undertake mock interviews with LinkedIn’s AI, helping you better prepare for the job hunt.

“Premium subscribers can also engage in highly personalized, scenario-based learning, practicing critical conversations like ‘how to ask for a referral’ or ‘how to negotiate my salary.’ Each session concludes with clear and actionable feedback, paired with LinkedIn Learning courses tailored to your growth areas.”

Finally, LinkedIn’s also rolling out a new “Career Journey” tool, which will help users define their goals, then craft a personalized learning plan to reach them.

These are some handy updates, which, based on LinkedIn’s ever-expanding database of educational and career insights, could well end up being powerful drivers of your job search process.

They’re certainly worth a look either way. And while some elements are only accessible to paying members, even the core AI updates could end up having significant value in your discovery.
