Baidu Launches Advanced Ernie AI Models to Compete in China’s Growing AI Race

Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) has launched upgraded versions of its Ernie artificial intelligence models, intensifying its push in China’s fast-evolving AI landscape. At a developer conference held in Wuhan, CEO Robin Li introduced Ernie 4.5 Turbo and Ernie X1 Turbo—marking a significant step in the company’s AI development roadmap.

Ernie 4.5 Turbo is Baidu’s flagship foundation model, now integrated with Baidu Cloud and enhanced with expanded memory, stronger reasoning, and reduced hallucinations. The Ernie X1 series, first released in March, is Baidu’s leading reasoning model designed for more complex AI tasks. Li showcased the advanced capabilities of 4.5 Turbo, emphasizing its support for building and operating digital AI agents across various use cases.

These releases aim to help Baidu keep pace with fierce domestic competition from AI players like DeepSeek, Alibaba (NYSE:BABA), and ByteDance. Although Baidu has been an early investor in AI, it currently trails Alibaba’s Quark and ByteDance’s Doubao in user adoption.

Rising geopolitical tensions pose another challenge. U.S. sanctions have limited AI chip exports to China, with Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) recently facing tighter restrictions. In response, Baidu revealed it has deployed a high-performance computing cluster powered by 30,000 domestically produced processors—ensuring continued development and training of its AI models despite limited access to U.S. chips.

Baidu’s latest AI announcement boosted investor confidence, with its Hong Kong-listed shares climbing up to 4% on Friday, contributing to a 1% rise in the Hang Seng Index.

As Baidu accelerates innovation in generative AI and large language models, its Ernie series is central to regaining momentum in the competitive Chinese AI market.
