YouTube’s Testing AI-Based Recommendations in Search Queries

Google’s AI overviews in search are now coming to YouTube, with its own variation of AI discovery tools within YouTube’s search display.

Which sounds a little strange, but with every platform looking to shove AI into everything, it also makes sense.

As explained by YouTube:

“We’re experimenting with a new video results carousel that appears after entering certain search queries. This new feature will use AI to highlight clips from videos that will be most helpful for your search query, providing another way to discover content when searching on YouTube as well as discover topics and information related to your search query.”

So rather than a test-based AI-generated explanation, YouTube will show you a series of clips that are likely related to your search.

Not sure how that’ll improve discovery, but…

“This is most likely to show when you search for more information about products you’re shopping for (such as “best noise canceling headphones”), or when you search for more information about locations or things to do in those locations (such as “museums to visit in San Francisco”).”

I mean, it doesn’t sound like a huge variance from current YouTube search results, and the ads that are displayed within the listings. But the idea is that this will make it easier, I guess, to see expanded results based on the content of your search query, as opposed to showing you straight keyword-based matches.

It doesn’t seem like a major addition either way, but it may prove to be valuable in various respects, providing another discovery option for a broader variety of queries.

Either way, it’s only a small-scale test for now.

YouTube says that it’s rolling this out “to a small number of YouTube Premium members in the US for some English search queries.”

A carousel of related clips, using contextual signals from your search query. It’s worth a look, I guess.
