Google AI overview may be behind spread of evidence-free rumor Musk was banned from Yankees games

Claims that tech billionaire Elon Musk was banned from attending New York Yankees spread on social media in April 2025 as the year’s Major League Baseball season got underway.

Users shared the claim on platforms including Facebook (archived), Instagram (archived) and Threads (archived), suggesting Musk was banned because of purported attempts to purchase the team, as well as alleged comments that he wanted to fire Aaron Boone, the team’s manager.

However, there is no evidence supporting the claim that Elon Musk was banned from New York Yankees games. Snopes reached out to the New York Yankees organization for comment and will update this piece if we receive a response.

A Google search for “Elon Musk banned from New York Yankees” offers no credible outlets reporting on these claims. The top results point back to the social media posts referenced above.

The source of the misinformation appeared to be a Yankees fan page on Facebook (archived) that posted the rumor on April 11, 2025, stating, “Elon Musk has been banned from all New York Yankees-related events following his $10 billion bid to buy the team and his desire to fire Aaron Boone.”

A Google search “AI Overview” that treats the aforementioned Facebook post as credible news when searching for “Elon Musk Aaron Boone” may have contributed to spreading the rumor.

Further, a broader Google search for “Elon Musk New York Yankees” surfaces a response from Google AI that sources an April Fools’ Day post claiming the Yankees have entered a $20 billion deal with Musk and again alleges the banning rumor is true despite zero credible evidence.

Another fan account on Facebook (archived) claimed in January 2025 that Musk was interested in buying the Yankees, sharing a purported screenshot of an X post by Musk. However, Snopes could not locate such a post on Musk’s account.

There is no further available evidence that Elon Musk has made any comments about buying the Yankees, being banned from their games or wanting to fire Boone.

There are many rumors concerning Elon Musk and sports teams, including a similar debunked rumor that the tech billionaire was banned from Kansas City Chiefs games and false claims he intended to buy the New York Jets and the Dallas Cowboys.
