Another “Big Dig” Near Old IBM Country Club on Watson Boulevard

People passing the site of the former IBM Country Club just west of Johnson City have been curious about the nature of a construction project that’s now underway.

Workers have been busy digging a deep hole on a site on Watson Boulevard in the town of Union.

Some of those who have noticed the activity were under the impression it was related to the long-planned development of a new supply well for the village of Endicott water system.

As it turns out, the work is unrelated to the proposed well project.

Union town supervisor Robert Mack said “a lot of calls” have been received from people who believe it’s the start of developing the new Endicott water well. But, he said, the work actually is for a town project.

Mack told WNBF News a new sanitary sewer pump station is being constructed. He said workers have dug “25 feet down from grade” for the project. He said they also built “a retaining wall in a circle all the way around” the site.

Mack said it “looks like they’ve built a big swimming pool.” He said “as they dig, they get closer and closer to the water table” which means water could start “bubbling up.” The process that’s being used is designed to contain any water as it rises.

The controls for the pump station will be placed above flood stage. A generator will be installed to enable to facility to operate during power outages.

Vacri Construction Corporation of Binghamton is being paid $740,000 for the work. The project is expected to be completed in about four weeks.

The last time there was a “big dig” project near the former IBM Country Club, workers were building a removable flood wall.
