François Chollet Starts an AI Lab Dedicated to AGI

François Chollet, a renowned AI researcher and the mind behind Keras, is embarking on a new venture. His startup, Ndea, aims to improve AI by developing systems capable of achieving AGI (Artificial General Intelligence). Co-founded with Mike Knoop, Zapier’s head of AI, Ndea’s purpose is to challenge current AI limitations.

What Is Ndea’s Vision?

Ndea isn’t just another AI startup. It’s a research and science lab focused on building frontier AI systems. But what does that mean? At its core, Ndea’s mission is to create AI that isn’t just reactive or limited to specific tasks. Instead, it seeks to develop AI capable of invention, adaptation, and innovation, skills often seen as uniquely human.

Chollet explains:

“We’re betting on a different path to build AI capable of true invention, adaptation, and innovation. We believe we have a small but real chance of achieving a breakthrough.”

This isn’t just tech jargon. AGI refers to AI systems that can handle any intellectual task a human can perform. Imagine an AI that can solve complex problems, learn independently, and improve without hitting a plateau.

The Role of Program Synthesis in Unlocking AGI

At the heart of Ndea’s strategy is program synthesis. This technique allows AI to learn and generalize from limited examples, tackling problems it has never encountered. Unlike traditional machine learning, which often requires vast datasets, program synthesis enables AI to infer solutions with remarkable efficiency.

While program synthesis is computationally intensive, Chollet is confident in overcoming this challenge. He believes it holds the key to solving some of AI’s most persistent bottlenecks:

“We are at the crest of a pivotal moment in scientific history. The world deserves every possible direct, unique attempt to build AGI.”

Why Is This Important Now?

The race toward AGI is heating up. Big players like OpenAI and Google are heavily invested in the field. But independent labs like Ndea bring a fresh perspective.

Chollet isn’t the first high-profile AI researcher to leave Big Tech for a startup. Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI’s co-founder, recently launched Safe Superintelligence, which has raised over $1 billion. Similarly, Fei-Fei Li now leads World Labs, focusing on AI-driven 3D simulations.

This trend means a growing belief that smaller, more focused teams might be better equipped to tackle the complex challenges of AGI.

François Chollet and Mike Knoop: A Dream Team

Chollet and Knoop bring complementary strengths to Ndea.

François Chollet: Best known for creating Keras, Chollet has nearly a decade of experience at Google. His work set the stage for developers’ approach to AI and machine learning.

Mike Knoop: As Zapier’s head of AI, Knoop brings practical expertise in building scalable systems. While stepping away from daily responsibilities at Zapier, he remains on its board to focus on Ndea.

Knoop’s excitement is palpable:

“Our first focus is on deep learning-guided program synthesis to create AGI that can invent, adapt, and innovate. But even more exciting is the chance to metaphorically time-travel into the future.”

Hiring the Best Minds in AI

To achieve its ambitious goals, Ndea is building a world-class team. They’re actively hiring remote researchers passionate about program synthesis and AGI. This recruitment push suggests the startup already has financial backing, though details about investors remain undisclosed.

How Does This Impact the Future of AI?

If Ndea succeeds, we could be blown by AI’s possibilities. Imagine breakthroughs in medicine, engineering, and environmental science accelerated by AGI systems that learn and innovate like humans.

But it’s not just about technology. Chollet and Knoop’s approach highlights a bigger paradigm: the shift toward ethical, purpose-driven AI development. By focusing on innovation and long-term impact, Ndea is setting a new standard for the industry.

The Road Ahead

The journey to AGI won’t be easy. Challenges include computational demands, ethical considerations, and fierce competition. But with pioneers like Chollet and Knoop leading the charge, the future looks promising.
